Written by kids for kids, The Gilesgate Story Challenge is a yearly writing competition where the children of Durham submit their stories based on a variety of themes. The stories are judged by a panel of local authors and booksellers and then two winners are chosen to have their stories illustrated! 

In 2020 the theme of the book was ‘Random acts of kindness’

The Gilesgate Story Challenge is funded by Simon Berry Optometrists, with profits from the book going to charity. The charities chosen for the 2020 edition were rtprojects & Cheesy Waffles Project.
